Balneotreatment in Bulgaria has an ancient history. Many archeological findings evidence the existence of balneo-hydrothermal centers as far back as 4th - 5th millennium BC

Balneology and climatotreatment had been practiced by the Thracians who laid the foundations of balneotherapy. They deeply respected the deity of the mineral water springs that were considered to be the springs of good health, strength and beauty. Around the hot mineral water springs they used to build new prospering towns as Pautalia ( Kyustendil ), Serdika ( Sofia ), etc.

During the Roman Empire balneology flourished and new balneological centers were developed – Augusta ( Hissarya ), Dessudeva ( Sandanski ), etc. and Pautalia and Augusta become the chief balneological centers in the Roman Empire.

Situated in the Southeastern part of Europe the main crossroad to Asia, Bulgaria covers a territory of only 110991 sq. km. and has a rich diversity of scenery and landscape, with the rare combination of high mountains, beaches, valleys, plains and rivers. Long 378km. Black Sea coast is covered with fine sand. The climate is moderate continental, modified by the Mediterranean in the South and Black Sea in the East.

Practically almost all kinds of MINERAL WATER known on the Planet can be found within the territory of Bulgaria. The temperature of mineral springs classifies them as:

Cold /under 20 C/;
Hypothermal /21 – 37 C/;
Isothermal /33-37 C/;
Hyperthermal /37 and higher/.

Almost ¾ of the mineral springs in Bulgaria are hyperthermal.

The Bulgarian mineral waters possess exceptionally great variety of chemical components with predominance of slightly mineralized ones in all variations – silicon, sulfuric, fluorite, but also with a high concentration of mineral salts – carbonate, sulfate, chloric as well as carbon, iodine, hydrogen, rich in iron and arsenic.

They are applied for internal (drinking) Spa treatment of diseases of the kidney and urinary system, of the gastro-intestinal tract, of the internal secretion glands and chronical intoxications. Sulfate-containing mineral waters are especially effective for diseases of the liver and the gall bladder.

Ferrous sulfate – have good curative effect in cases of anemia.

Salty mineral waters are best for external Spa treatment of rheumatic, degenerative diseases and inflammatory processes as well as for traumatic, orthopedic neurogical and gynecological diseases.

Gas waters containing hydrogen sulfide and radon waters have biostimulative curative effect.

The MUD excavated from the sea bottom is also extremely curative for a great number of diseases. It can be found in considerable amounts in the salty lakes. Around some of the balneological centers with water gushing straight from the ground sediments of curative mud has also been formed.

The variety of curative factors available in BG give many advantages for mineral waters and mud treatment of different diseases, inflammations and complications of locomotory, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, some occupational diseases, traumas, etc.

The course of treatment is always supervised and controlled by highly qualified medical doctors, nurses and physiotherapists. Different methods of treatment are applied:

Pelotherapy (mud cure);
Physiotherapy (light-, electro-, magnetotherapy, D`Arsonval, etc.);
Aero-ion therapy;
Balneotherapy (water-cure);
Thermotherapy (paraffin applications, sand, sauna, etc.);
Kinesitherapy (physical exercises, massages, walks, etc.);
Acupuncture.

All Bulgarian balneological centers are located in regions with favorable climatic conditions. The hotel structure on which balneology is based has proved to be one the best. The hotels are equipped with modern medical apparatus and their balneological centers are strictly controlled by the Ministry of Health.

These factors, combined with favorable climate, mineral waters and mud sources contribute for the tourists` efficient recreation, prophylaxis, physiotherapy, balneotherapy, rehabilitation and treatment of a lot of diseases.
